AVITA’s opinion on spectrum reform

AVITA ry has written a statement to the Ministry of Transport and Communications on the consultation round of the spectrum reform

Narrowing the UHF band before harmonisation at EU level would create significant technical, economic and operational problems for a wide range of critical operators, such as theatres, television and film productions, event and tour operators, council halls, educational institutions and the hospitality and cultural sector, whose activities rely on the interference-free use of parallel radio equipment. Bringing forward the schedule is not in line with manufacturers’ production models and the availability of non-EU frequency versions in Finland would jeopardise the realisation of productions and undermine international compatibility. The draft Regulation lacks a comprehensive assessment of the technical implications of the PMSE sector, the economic consequences, the international risks, the feasibility of investment cycles, the environmental impact and the relationship with the obligations of the Radio Spectrum Directive and the internal market. The change would lead to the premature scrapping of a significant amount of fully operational equipment, at high cost to public and private operators and jeopardising the continuity of production in Finland. In view of these considerations, Avita considers that the Regulation cannot be adopted in the form proposed.
